2010 Connoisseurship Series

What separates good collections from great collections? Why do great collectors always seem to make the "great" find? During this series, renowned authorities will share their expertise and insight as to how they weigh quality, condition, rarity, desirability, provenance and price when making a prospective purchase. Examples from the Society's collection pertinent to each evening’s topic will be on display for the purpose of discussion.
The series is an ideal opportunity for those new to collecting or to Newburyport as well as seasoned collectors to learn from experts in their respective fields. This small and intimate format will allow those in attendance to examine extremely fine and rare objects — up close and in-depth.
Pre-registration is required. Reservations are accepted on a first come, first served basis and may be made by calling the Society’s office at 978.462.2681. The fee is $15 per lecture or $40 for the entire series.

  • Tuesday, March 9th at 7:00 pm
Militaria in the Collection of the Historical Society
Rare and important weapons and uniforms spanning three centuries will be unlocked from the displays of the military room and on show for review. Chris Snow, antiquarian and weapons aficionado, will uncover some of their specialized uses as well as a progression of technological evolutions which changed the field of battle.
  • Tuesday, March 16th at 7:00 pm
Political and Social Clues in Art: Observations on Newburyport’s Historical Prints
John W. Raimo earned his doctorate in early American history at the University of Wisconsin. Along with his many years of service as a university faculty member, Dr. Raimo has over twenty-five years of experience as a dealer of fine paintings and works on paper. His background is particularly suited to this evening’s topic which will reveal Newburyport’s response to larger social and political movements. Of course, the core of materials shown will be sourced from the Society’s collections.
  • Tuesday,  March 23rd at 7:00 pm
From Soup to Nuts: More American Silver Flatware from the 1840s to the Early 1900s
By the middle of the nineteenth century, the number of utensils “necessary” to “properly” serve and consume a wide variety of foods began to steadily increase, ultimately reaching almost ridiculous levels. Building on his sold-out 2009 presentation, advanced collector Byron M. Getchell will discuss more of the pieces, the proper use of which could make dining an ordeal. Wherever possible, examples by Newburyport makers will be shown.
